Net Worth and Budget Update – November, 2016

Last month’s update can be found here.

It’s that time again that we check our monthly budget and net worth. At the end of every month, we sit down for an hour or so and go through all of our income and expenses for the previous month. This month we have decided to combine the budget and net worth posts for simplicity and will do this going forward.

Here is a summary of our November budget:

Income: $21,364.17 (up 171% from the previous month)

Well, what can we say?! This is our highest income month ever! It won’t be like this every month but we’ll take it. This month Len got a very special cash gift from his grandma for his birthday which contributed a large chunk to this month’s income. We also made a good chunk of cash from our side jobs (Toon’s photography business and Len’s side business).

Expenses: $5,736.99 (up 5% from the previous month)

This included standard repayments for our home loan ($1500), groceries of just under $1000, Council water services and rates payments, around $700 for eating out due to again a number of birthdays this month and gifts for our families.

Monthly Savings Rate: 73.15% – if only it was like this every month but it’s definitely very encouraging and numbers that we would like to repeat next year. The expenses are still much higher than we would like and after next month’s budget we will review our budget for 2017 and aim to reduce expenses where we can.

Yearly Savings Rate: 44.27%

Net Worth

We track our net worth to see how all of our assets and liabilities are moving along. We do this for two reasons; firstly, it gives us a good way of keeping on top of our various investments and secondly, it allows us to see whether we are progressing towards our goal of being financially free.

We have been playing around with how we track our net worth and will provide more details on the numbers in the coming months. For now, we are including the equity in our home and superannuation.

Here are our results for the month of November:

Assets: $693,534.90 (up 4.33% from the previous month)

Liabilities: $331,024.43 (down -2.85% from the previous month)

Net Worth: $362,509.46 (up 11.88% from the previous month)

Nice work here guys, happy B’day to Len as well :)!
Out of interest, what software do you use for tracking net worth? I like the clean interface there..

Also would be cool if you turned on subscribe to the comments as it’s cool to read responses

Cheers and here’s to an awesome December too

    • Thanks, Jef! We’re just using boring old Excel to track our budget and net worth. Although the inputs are manual, I find that there is more flexibility to play around with the numbers and graphs. And thanks for the subscribe to comments idea. It should be working now!

      Cheers,
      Len

Cheers, yeah that’ll make it easier to see when a comment comes through in case you guys ask a question haha
